The September Story Behind Every Photograph over the years has been devoted to imagery I’ve created in remembrance of the tragedy that rocked our country on September 11th, 2001. This month’s image came about last December 22nd when I left CT @ 3:30 am for a photography scouting trip to NYC prior to picking up my eldest son and family coming in from Texas for the Christmas holiday. There were multiple stories worthy of a Blog that came out of that one morning…this is one. Most times meaningful art results from an emotional connection, whether it be music, writing, acting or in my case visual stimulation. Many times I’ve encouraged young photographers, to See, don’t just Look ! See the final potential in what you are looking at…this month’s image is a clear example of that axiom.
With my predawn scouting mission in place I needed to fill 3+ hours prior to a Newark airport pickup. Liberty State Park in Jersey City has always moved and fascinated me as seen in a B&W image here I created back in May 2017. The Empty Sky Story Behind blog is linked in blue.
As I walked down the path of the Empty Sky Memorial I saw an amazing sky happening in front of me across the Hudson River seen in the combined color photo above. Such a peaceful and warm December 22nd I could clearly see the prominent Freedom Tower gracing the skyline of NYC. Knowing the new tower replaced the Twin Towers ruthlessly destroyed on 9/11/2001, I reflected on the beauty of the scene and the serenity falling over Manhattan that December morning. Soon I turned back towards the Empty Sky Memorial. Six or eight feet in front of me was the inscription on the brushed stainless-steel wall facing the Manhattan skyline. I had never before seen these words on previous visits. In a flash those inscribed words transported me back to the tragedy of that awful Tuesday morning, a clear and peaceful morning, much like this December morning 22 years later. “Looking” beyond the words I would soon clearly “see” the symbolism in the subtle color skyline reflection that lay beneath the ever poignant words. An exciting, yet peaceful blue sky, the warmth of the day’s new sun on the restored Manhattan skyline offered a snippet of the American Spirit.
You may-not be able to touch America’s resolve, but if you look deeper, you can clearly See it !
Beautifully written as always Steve. I’m familiar with the area. What an experience so early in the morning ☀️

There is a very rare talent that an infinitesimal amount of artists thru time nurture. The ability to close your eyes and describe a scene orally that has been written to the point of deep understanding of the artist’s vision and their total understanding of what they see. The inner eyes connection to the brain’s in-depth stimulus that captures the artist’s intent.
You Steve are that individual and the breed is rare , very rare. The gift you share with everyone truly enhances their lives. Well done Sherm well done
Just goes to show, as you clearly state… Just take another look…
There always more to see. Especially from a trained eye like yours. Always looking back just to make sure something wasn’t missed. Not sure SS could ever miss a thing when it’s behind that camera. 💕

The words come from the heart of a man who not only see but actual feels what he looking at.
